Ex-teacher charged with making false statement about PM
S Chandrasegaran, who was charged at the Shah Alam sessions court, faces a maximum fine of RM50,000 and a five-year jail term, if convicted.
SHAH ALAM : A former teacher pleaded not guilty before the sessions court here to making a false statement about Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on TikTok.
S Chandrasegaran was slapped with the charge under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for making a video containing 'false content'.
The impugned video was uploaded on Dec 30, 2024.
If found guilty, Chandrasegaran faces a fine of up to RM50,000, a jail sentence that can extend up to five years, or both.
Judge Nor Hasniah Razak granted Chandrasegaran bail of RM7,000 with one surety.
She also ordered him to surrender his passport to the court pending the disposal of his case.
Chandrasegaran's lawyer Muhammad Nor Tamrin earlier urged the court to impose a minimum bail, saying his client is a cancer patient.
Deputy public prosecutor Nurul Sofea Jaysal appeared for the prosecution.
